General Dentistry

Prosthodontists are specialist trained and can provide the full range of General Dentistry services that a general dentist offers. Before becoming specialists, prosthodontists train to be general dentists first. Dr Schwass had nearly 20 years experience as a general dentist before choosing to embark on specialist training which he completed in 2009.

Prosthodontists provide evidence-based treatment that is designed to offer predictable and long-lasting outcome. Prosthodontists often choose to involve other specialist disciplines to address specific treatment needs to ensure the best possible outcome, providing a solid foundation upon which prosthodontic procedures can be provided.

Just like building a house, it is important to have solid foundations when restoring a dentition.

Excellent gum health that a Periodontist can provide and high-quality root canal therapy (when required) that an Endodontist can provide are considered essential starting points for prosthodontic treatment. Sometimes teeth aren’t in the best position for a reconstruction to proceed,  and need to be moved to provide a better outcome;  this is where an Orthodontist is involved.

Prosthodontists often refer to Periodontists or Oral Surgeons for the surgical component of a treatment plan to ensure an optimal outcome is reached for their patients.

Prosthodontists are often considered the architects of dentistry, as they are often the key influence in planning and coordinating treatment involving many disciplines.
