Your First Visit – The Initial Consultation

At the first consultation visit the prosthodontist will examine your teeth and broadly discuss options with you. At this time you may be asked for details regarding your previous dental history and medical history, about your lifestyle and oral health care routines at home.

This first  consultation usually takes around 45 minutes.

To  find out more about treatment, detailed records are often required which can require a further visit, usually taking around 60 to 90 minutes.  As well as performing a thorough clinical examination, x-rays, impressions for study models, records of how your upper and lower teeth fit together, and photographs of your teeth may be taken. All this helps the Prosthodontist put together an accurate and complete picture of your mouth and treatment needs. After time taken to evaluate the information gathered, a range of treatment options is normally developed and presented to you at a further visit.

An important part of taking your medical history details is understanding what medications you are taking and being aware of the drug interactions and side effects that can affect your mouth. Please remember to bring a complete list of prescribed medications you are taking with you to your first appointment.

Patients referred for prosthodontic treatment often  have complex needs requiring specialist support and there are many different combinations of treatment possible. Because of this, before confirming the cost of treatment, a prosthodontic consultation is needed to identify what is required. After the consultation, patients are provided with a written confirmation letter detailing their dental problem list, professional fees, payment terms and limitations of the treatment.
