Don Schwass BSc BDS(Dist) DClinDent(Pros)

Dr Don Schwass gained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waikato in 1986, and a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (with distinction) from the University of Otago in 1989. After a brief period working as a Dental House Surgeon at Dunedin Hospital, he then worked for 17 years in private general dental practice; most of these as the sole owner of a thriving group dental practice in North Otago.

Don returned to the University of Otago in 2007, awarded a University of Otago Scholarship, and completing his specialist qualification with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) Prosthodontics, in 2009.  In 2010, Don joined the academic staff of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago teaching undergraduate dentistry and postgraduate prosthodontics.  Don was the Clinical Director for the Faculty of Dentistry from 2017 until his departure from the University at the end of 2021, drawing on over 30 years of clinical experience to inform effective governance of clinical activities.

Since 2010, Don has maintained a part-time position in a Dunedin private practice as a Prosthodontic Specialist.

Commencing 2022, Don has taken the exciting step of moving into full-time private practice, providing specialist prosthodontic services to the people of Central Otago and Lakes District, based in Cromwell.

Beyond the work environment, Don is a keen road cyclist and mountain biker; you’ll often find him out exploring Central Otago with his partner.

Don also enjoys a spot of freshwater fishing.  When he finds himself indoors, Don is an avid toy collector, Lego Builder, and modeler of finely detailed model trains and radio control vehicles.
